It is interesting and instructive to visit several breeders or owners. The choice of an alpaca is not always easy, and it can be difficult to estimate its value. You can take advice from a qualified person but, you must specify your objectives clearly. If you seek a pet, the deciding factor will be “your favorite” but it also needs to be healthy and not overly timid with people.
If you are seeking a breeding animal, it may also be “your favourite” but you need to ensure its other qualities -conformation, maternal aspects for females, and an ability to reproduce their own quality. The results of fleece testing, as well as places won at shows, give a good indication of quality, and especially so if they were awarded by different judges. Expect to pay a high price for a good quality animal.
